The Eden Alternative®
December 2018/January 2019
Our Mission: To improve the well-being of Elders and their care partners
by transforming the communities in which they live and work.
During the holiday season more than ever, our thoughts turn gratefully to all of you who are transforming Eldercare in big and small ways.
Because of you, the Eden Alternative’s mission to improve the well-being of Elders and their care partners by transforming the communities in which they live and work is truly coming to life. Because of you, others are inspired to join the journey with us. It is in this spirit we say, simply but sincerely...
Thank you and Best Wishes for the Holiday Season!
Christmas Wish List Idea for All Registry Members!
We would like to switch things up a bit in 2019 and use webcams to connect through a virtual environment (Zoom) instead of just over the phone. It will be really nice to be able to see all of your amazing faces and get to know each other better (Principle Three).
If possible, please request a webcam set-up for your computer for Christmas this year so you can join in the fun in 2019!
Click here to find some examples of webcams that might work for your team.

Your Education Plans for 2019
Does your team have plans to provide more person-directed care educational opportunities to care partners? If you are planning to host a training, choose your dates soon and reach out to Meredith Martin at firstname.lastname@example.org to finalize arrangements.
If you want to join a training happening online or at another location, keep an eye on the events calendar or Meredith can assist you with that as well. The Eden Alternative has great educational offerings that reach well beyond what is taught in Certified Eden Associate Training (or Eden at Home Associate Training).
Make 2019 the time your team learns more about leadership, the GROWTH Model, dementia care, facilitation skills, and/or growing self-directed work teams!
Keep Growing Your Journey in 2019

Ideas Worth Sharing
Here is a great story from the team at Peach Tree Village in Brandon, MS about opening their doors to some spontaneity from a local high school band. It’s heartwarming! Click here to read the story and be sure to click on the link and view the video on Facebook as well.
The team at Morgantown Care and Rehabilitation Center in Morgantown, KY has started something they are calling the Food Truck Extravaganza! What an incredible idea. They started in September, inviting one local food truck per week to come and park at the home. The Elder and employee care partners could choose to enjoy the food from the food truck or eat in the dining room. The local community residents could come by as well. The food trucks sold out their food and they all wanted to come back. They have suspended their visits for the winter, but will start up again in the spring. What a great way to foster a connection with the larger community and the Elders, as well as provide some delightful, and unexpected, food options. Way to go team Morgantown!
The team at North Star Rehabilitation and Care Community, Denver, CO, invited a team from Thrive Health Systems to do a lunch and learn with the employee care partners. They brought delicious food for everyone and did a presentation on stress and how to recognize signs of stress. Dr. Maddox was the speaker. She shared her own personal experience and offered tips to help the employee care partners be healthy and de-stress their lives. What a timely topic for us all. We hope everyone at North Star is feeling calm and collected for the holidays ahead!
The team at Pigeon Forge Care & Rehabilitation Center in Pigeon Forge, TN, renamed their therapy center. The new name is Local Motion. The name was chosen by the residents because the movements of the train remind them of the movements they make in therapy. It was also chosen for historical reasons based on the fact that in the past there were trains that came to both Sevierville and Gatlinburg. The therapy train is the "415" which is their address and the identifying numbers at the bottom of the train is their zip code. The train station is complete with a ticket booth, rail road crossing signs, signal lights and a station clock
The words above the door say "All Aboard, Your Culture Change Journey Begins Here" which signifies the change the residents experience through the therapy program and beyond. What a creative idea!
There is an Elder living at Willow Lodge in Tatamagouche, NS. She was born and raised in Tatamagouche and in her later years (80’s) married a man and moved to Moncton, NB. She spent several years there with her husband until her health started to fail and her memory was slipping. She and her family decided to move her back to Tatamagouche where she could be cared for by family until she could move into Willow Lodge. The family was happy to have her back but her husband missed her greatly. He made the two-hour drive to see her, but it wore him out. He took a nap on her bed and then drove back to Moncton the same day. During his second visit, her care partners showed him a family room (small apartment with a kitchen, bathroom, and living room with a pullout couch) where he could spend time when he came to visit. This turned about to be a great option. He could easily rest when at Willow Lodge and have privacy to spend time with his wife. What a great idea to offer these accommodations to visiting family members so they can spend as much time as they desire with their loved one!
