Well-Being: The Core of Daily Life
The Eden Alternative Academy
Well-being is the path to a life worth living. It is the ultimate outcome of a human life. Semester 3 of the Eden Alternative Academy will explore the topic of well-being, providing structure
and practical application in the lives of Elders and their care partners using the Eden Alternative Domains of Well-Being™ as the framework. The Domains of Well-Being include: Identity, Growth, Autonomy, Security, Connectedness, Meaning and Joy. The Eden Alternative recognizes the importance of strengthening well-being for all members of the care partner team. In a true community, we can only experience well-being, if those surrounding us are also.
The semester starts on August 23, 2017 and runs for 8 weeks (one-hour per week), ending on October 11, 2017. Mark your calendar and get yourself, or your team registered today!
Eden Registry Webinar:
A Community Committed to Person-Directed Care
Take a new look at The Eden Alternative and the Eden Registry! The Eden Registry is open to long-term care settings, home and community-based service organizations, and those who support people with different abilities (developmental and cognitive). Membership in the Eden Registry provides organizations with tools, resources, community networking, ongoing support, and marketing opportunities.
This free webinar will cover the Registry’s mission and purpose, as well as the benefits and expectations of organizations that belong to it. A key resource from The Eden Alternative called The Path to Mastery™: The Art of Creating a Caring Community will be introduced. It has been adapted to fit the unique needs of organizations across the continuum of care. This tool guides organizations in joining the Registry, initiating and sustaining change, and identifying ways to be on the cutting edge of the person-directed care movement.
Whether you are considering membership, or are in the process of completing the application, this webinar will provide information that will guide your next steps. We are looking forward to having your organization join this community of support.

2017 Registry Networking Calls
The 2017 Registry networking calls have been scheduled for the year and the topics are focused on the Eden Alternative Domains of Well-Being. You can register and download a copy of this year’s schedule on the “Webinar, Networking and Conference Call Schedule” page of the Registry Member only section of the website. The calls happen monthly on the first Thursday of the month at 2pm ET (1pm CT, noon MT, 11am PT).
It will be fun to explore each Domain of Well-Being separately as well as talk about how to use all seven domains in identifying unmet needs. It will be a great way to get your team familiar with the Domains of Well-Being so you can be strategic about how to integrate them into systems and processes. It will also be an opportunity to teach others what you are doing and celebrate successes!
• July 6, 2017: Domain of Meaning
• August 3, 2017: Domain of Growth
• September 7, 2017: Domain of Joy
Ideas Worth Sharing
The team at Chautauqua Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, DeFuniak Springs, FL, has a novel idea. They hold GoGo’s, which stands for “get one, give one.” On days you least expect it, there will be biscuits and jelly at central locations in the home. Anyone can come and “get” a biscuit but they also have to “give” a biscuit to an Elder (preferably someone who spends most of the day in their room). Rumor has it that it is more like “get one, give ten!” They are having a great time giving and receiving from one another!
The team at Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home hold a Thanksgiving Circle monthly that involves all the care partners (Elders, employees, family members, etc.) Recently they share a YouTube video about the Daffodil Principle. The message they shared is that we can start today to make a difference. Then they talked about ways they can make a difference, what each of them can do, what their goals and dreams are. Come to find out, they have big things to dream and do! Their other fun conversation recently was the Hug Experiment that they did in Italy. What great ideas to pass along. How might you use them to enrich your journey?

The team at Kings Way Care Centre in Quispamsis, NB, had some employee care partners that recently returned from Certified Eden Associate Training. They were inspired to create a simple pleasure with the Elders. So, guess what they did? They built a campfire and gathered the Elders late in the evening to star gaze and eat s’mores. The story goes that there was a lot of laughter and oozing chocolate and marshmallow on some faces. Guess it had been a while since some of the Elders had enjoyed that simple pleasure. How easy was that … and what a big difference it made!
Angie McAllister, Eden Mentor and Educator, with Signature HealthCARE provided a great article in McKnight’s about transforming organizations to embrace person-directed care. She provides five hints about how to begin the journey. Her hints can be built on using the Eden Alternative Path to Mastery. Be inspired, or re-inspired, to pick up the Path to Mastery Milestone you are working on and assess your progress toward person-directed care. As a member of the Eden Registry, you are on the cutting edge! Keep that edge sharp because, as Angie says, “… in today’s society we have a larger obligation than ever to reach for something more” when it comes to the care of the Elders we serve.
Check out this TED Talk by Lucy Kalanithi. It is entitled What makes life worth living in the face of death. It is a powerful reminder of what it means to bring genuine human caring into the work we do as many care partners spend those final days with an Elder or individual they support. It is worth watching!
Celebrating Milestone mastery:
• Wesley Manor, Hattiesburg, MS – Milestone 3 mastery!
• SEM Haven Health & Residential Care, Milford, OH – Milestone 2 mastery!
• Broadway Terrace, Regina, SK – Milestone 2 mastery!
The team at Mission at West Jordan, West Jordan, UT are beginning a fund raising campaign to expand their home. They collaborated with Salt Lake Community College to create a video that talks about life in their community. They have been a member of the Eden Registry for 7 years and have achieved mastery in Milestone 3 of the Path to Mastery. They are an amazing community! Enjoy their video.
The 2017 Elder vacations for Signature HealthCARE have begun. Check out the adventurous spirit of those who headed to Panama City Beach in early May. It looks like they had a great time!
