New Research Reveals the Positive Impact of Person-Directed Care

 

A Signature Research Institute study highlights the impact of the Eden Alternative Ten Principles

Authors Angie McAllister and Jeff Beaty have detailed the results of a recent study completed by Signature HealthCare regarding the impact of person-directed care practices on some of their communities.  Published in the Journal of Aging Science, their article shares the outcomes from a 5-year research project that focused on these five questions:

1. Is there a relationship between person-directed care and culture change on quality of life and well-being in elders located in nursing homes?

2. How are occupancy rates and finance affected by the introduction of the person-directed care solution?

So, I watched the Oscars with a friend last night.  As midnight here on the East Coast neared, it was time to reveal the winning film for the Best Picture category.

Like a bizarre replay of the recent Miss Universe foible, the wrong film was announced as the winner.   A little time would reveal that the mistake involved a backstage mix-up in the handoff of the envelopes to the award presenters.  Yet, immediately after the kerfuffle took place, several comments and Tweets let loose, targeting the age of the esteemed presenters...

Imagine people who live with dementia are thriving in your community — what does it look like? They would mentor others, engaging meaningfully with people of all ages; they would feel love, compassion and be comfortable coming out of the ‘dementia closet’; they would feel purpose, capable of adapting to changes; there would always be opportunities to learn and grow.

These were just a few of the visions of an ideal future we created in Seattle during the first day of our two-day retreat to “disrupt” the tragedy narrative around Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in partnership with the true experts — people living with dementia and their family and friends...
