USS Alumni Socials are an opportunity for speedskating friends to get together around a USS event in their region. A more casual occasion than our periodic Alumni Reunions, USS Alumni Members (complimentary attendance/invite with membership) and Speedskating Alumni can get together and catch up over a drink and light hors d'oeuvres and enjoy some excellent speed skating action.

Details on Alumni Socials will be posted on the USS Alumni Web Page and our USS Alumni Facebook page. Check often, post about your fellow alum, and we hope you'll be able join us for at one of the following events below:

  • Jan. 19: US Speedskating Long Track Jr. Championships, Lake Placid, NY
    • Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 - 7:00-9:30 p.m.
    • ‘Wiseguys Sports Bar & Grill” - 11 School St., Lake Placid, NY
    • The location is only a short walk from the Lake Placid Oval. It will be a fun time cheering on our junior athletes as they compete in the championships.
  • Mar. 22- 24: US Short Track Age Class Championships, Verona, WI
    • Time and location TBD.

Lucas Mills grew up in a family full of athletes. He spent his early years riding in the family van, traveling to competitions for his siblings’ many sports. He raced in his first speedskating meet as a Tiny Tot—he claims it was a disaster—and was competing regularly by the age of 7.

After years racing both long track and short track, Lucas moved away from home at the age of 14 to Milwaukee, where he soon earned a spot on the Junior National Long Track Team. He raced in three Junior World Championships and eventually made the Senior National Team, competing in both Sprint and Allround World Cups.

After retiring from skating, Lucas earned degrees from Yale University and Yale Law School before switching gears to pursue a career writing animation. He spent several years as a television writer for Nickelodeon, living in both New York City and Dublin, Ireland. He currently resides in Los Angeles, where he writes cartoons at DreamWorks Animation.

The Alumni Commission caught up with Lucas for a few laps. Click here to read.

We want to recognize alumni for their accomplishments. If would like to share a marriage, a new arrival, a promotion or other honor, share it in the Alumni Journal. We're always looking to feature Alumni in the  Spotlight Series, so let us know who you'd like to read about. Contact Peri Kinder, pkinder@usspeedskating.org with your tips.

USS thrives on the generosity of our donors. Does your company have a matching volunteer policy? If so, take the opportunity to submit a request for a USS match and double down on the valuable contribution you're making to our sport.
